High-rise buildings present unique challenges for life safety with respect to building occupants and emergency personnel. These tall structures require special features and an increased level of protection because of the difficulties associated with smoke movement, increased egress time, limited access for first responders, and their potential vulnerability to terrorist attacks. Building codes have historically evolved over time due to the development of new technologies, studies, and historical events. This is especially true for high-rise buildings in the past 20 years. The intent of this presentation is to provide a summary of the major design features required for high-rise buildings and discuss some of the possible compliance options to consider.
